New NaqqaliWomen of the Shahnameh
A manga series for younger readers: one woman of the Shahnameh in each issue, telling her own story in her own words beside Ferdowsi’s verse. Free to read online.
W1: Tahmineh
She chose Rostam. She raised his son. She tied his father’s sign on the boy’s arm.
Tahmineh, princess of Samangan, tells her own story: the night she went to Rostam by candlelight and asked him to marry her, the son who grew like trouble, the morning she tied his father’s token on the boy’s arm and sent him to find Rostam, and the news that came back. Her words, from the first-person retelling of her life by Farzad and Rhonda Dibachi, run beside the couplets of Ferdowsi’s poem in our rhyming English verse. 141 panels across 74 pages of black-and-white ink with ten full-colour pages, made for younger readers. With a cast page, a map, an afterword, the night in Samangan in full verse, and a glossary.
