Much of the night had passed; for a last farewell, as soon as all the household had gone to sleep, I got up in my shirt and underpants and went into the dead woman’s room.

I wanted to kiss her hand and leave the room, but when I turned I saw, to my surprise, that this same harlot who is now my wife entered

Involuntarily I embraced and kissed her, but at that moment the curtain of the adjoining room was drawn aside and my aunt’s husband—the father of this same harlot—entered the room, hunchbacked and wearing a scarf.

From shame I wished to sink into the ground, and if I could I would have struck the dead woman’s face hard, as she looked at us mockingly. What disgrace! Terrified, I ran out of the adjoining room.
