Where the text names it
At that moment they were carrying a coffin past my room’s window, covered with black cloth, with a candle burning on top of it.
The sound of “There is no god but God” drew my attention. All the shopkeepers and passersby turned back from their way and walked seven steps behind the coffin.
Even the butcher came, walked seven steps behind the coffin for religious merit, and returned to his shop. But the old peddler did not budge from his spread-out wares.
Was my room not a coffin? Was my bed not colder and darker than a grave? A bed that always lay there inviting me to sleep.
Many times the thought had occurred to me that I was inside a coffin. At night it seemed that my room grew smaller and pressed against me.
Sometimes my room became so narrow that it was as though I lay inside a coffin.
