Who and what is here
For the illustration A hunched writer before a smoking lamp, his shadow on the wall an enormous owl reading over his shoulder.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
In this room, which like a grave was becoming narrower and darker every moment, night had surrounded me with its terrifying shadows.
Before the smoking oil lamp, with the fur coat and cloak I had wrapped around myself and the scarf I had tied on, my shadow fell upon the wall in a hunched posture.
My shadow was cast on the wall much darker and more distinct than my actual body.
It was as though the old junk dealer, the butcher, Naneh-Joon, and my harlot wife were all my shadows; shadows among which I was imprisoned.
At that moment I had become like an owl, but my moans were caught in my throat, and I spat them out in the form of spots of blood.
Perhaps the owl too has an illness that makes it think like me!
My shadow on the wall had become exactly like an owl and, bent over, was carefully reading my writings.
Certainly it understood well; only it could understand.
I was afraid when I looked at my shadow from the corner of my eye.
A dark and silent night, like the night that had enveloped my entire life.
With frightening figures that made faces at me from doors and walls, from behind the curtain.
Sometimes my room became so narrow that it was as though I lay inside a coffin.
My temples burned; my nerves were not ready for the least movement.
A weight pressed on my chest, like the weight of carcasses thrown onto the back of a thin black packhorse and delivered to the butchers.
Like a mute person compelled to repeat every word, who, as soon as he reaches the end of a line of verse, begins again from the start.
Its song penetrated the flesh like the vibration of a saw’s groan; it cried out and suddenly was stifled.
