The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P001.L01

In life there are wounds that, like canker, slowly eat away at and scrape the soul in solitude.

P001.L02

These pains cannot be disclosed to anyone, because people generally have the habit of counting such unbelievable pains among rare and strange events and occurrences;

P001.L03

and if someone speaks or writes of them, people, according to prevailing beliefs and their own beliefs, try to receive it with a skeptical and mocking smile;

P001.L04

because humankind has not yet found a remedy or medicine for it, and its only medicine is forgetfulness through wine and artificial sleep by means of opium and narcotic substances;

P001.L05

but alas, the effect of these kinds of medicines is temporary, and instead of soothing, after a while it adds to the intensity of the pain.

P002.L01

Will anyone one day discover the secrets of these supernatural occurrences, this reflection of the shadow of the soul that appears in a state of unconsciousness and in the interval between sleep and wakefulness?

P003.L01

I shall deal only with the account of one of these occurrences, which happened to me and shook me so much that I shall never forget it,

P003.L02

and its ominous mark—as long as I am alive, from the first day to eternity, as far as is beyond human understanding and perception—will poison my life.

P003.L03

I wrote “poison,” but I meant to say that I have always borne, and shall always bear, its brand with me.

P004.L01

I shall try to write what I remember, what has remained in my mind of the connection between events, so that perhaps I can make an overall judgment about it;

P004.L02

no! Only to become certain, or even to be able to believe it myself—because it is of no importance to me whether others believe it or not.

P004.L03

I only fear that I may die tomorrow without yet having known myself.

P004.L04

For in the course of life experiences I encountered the fact that there is a terrible abyss between me and others;

P004.L05

and I understood that as far as possible one must remain silent, as far as possible I must keep my thoughts to myself,

P004.L06

and if I have now decided to write, it is only so that I may introduce myself to my shadow—a shadow bent over on the wall, which seems to swallow everything I write with the greatest appetite.

P004.L07

It is for it that I want to make an experiment; to see whether perhaps we can know one another better.

P004.L08

Because since the time I severed all my relations with others, I have wanted to know myself better.

P005.L01

Empty thoughts! Let it be so, but they torment me more than any truth.

P005.L02

Are these people who resemble me, who apparently have my needs and desires, not there to deceive me?

P005.L03

Are they not a handful of shadows that have come into existence only to mock and deceive me?

P005.L04

Is not all that I feel, see, and measure illusory, and very different from reality?

P006.L01

I write only for my own shadow, which has fallen on the wall in front of the lamp; I must introduce myself to it.
