The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P007.L01

In this low world full of poverty and destitution, for the first time I thought that a ray of sunlight had shone in my life;

P007.L02

but alas, this was not a ray of sunlight, but only a passing gleam, a shooting star, that appeared to me in the form of a woman or an angel,

P007.L03

and in its light, for one instant, only one second, I saw all the misfortunes of my life and grasped its greatness and splendor,

P007.L04

and afterward this gleam disappeared again into the whirlpool of darkness in which it had to disappear.

P007.L05

No, I could not keep this passing gleam for myself.

P008.L01

It had been three months—no—two months and four days since I had lost her trace,

P008.L02

but the memory of her magical eyes, or the deadly spark of her eyes, remained forever in my life.

P008.L03

How can I forget her, when she is so bound up with my life?

P009.L01

No, I shall never utter her name, because she, with that ethereal, slender, misty figure,

P009.L02

with those two large, astonished, shining eyes behind which my life slowly and painfully burned and melted, no longer belongs to this low, predatory world.

P009.L03

No, I must not contaminate her name with earthly things.

P010.L01

After her I withdrew myself completely from the circle of people, from the circle of fools and fortunate people, and for forgetfulness I took refuge in wine and opium.

P010.L02

My life passed, and passes, all day within the four walls of my room.

P010.L03

My entire life has passed within four walls.

P011.L01

All day my occupation was painting on pen-case covers.

P011.L02

All my time was devoted to painting on pen-case covers and using alcoholic drink and opium,

P011.L03

and I had adopted the ridiculous occupation of painting pen cases in order to stupefy myself, in order to kill time.
