The Blind Owl · scene 3 of 77 · part one

The house among ruins and the pen-case motif

His isolated house stands among ruins at the edge of the city, like a house painted on old pen cases. Whatever he paints is always the same scene: a hunched old man under a cypress, finger to his lips, and a girl in black offering him a morning glory across a stream.

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P012.L01

By good fortune, my house is outside the city, in a quiet and peaceful place far from the uproar and commotion of people’s lives;

P012.L02

its surroundings are completely isolated, and around it are ruins.

P012.L03

Only on the other side of the ditch do battered mud houses appear, and the city begins.

P012.L04

I do not know what madman or person of crooked taste built this house in the age of Decius!

P012.L05

When I close my eyes, not only do all its nooks and crannies take shape before my eyes, but I feel their pressure on my shoulders.

P012.L06

A house such as might only have been painted on old pen cases.

P013.L01

I must write all these things to see whether I have not deluded myself!

P013.L02

I must explain all these things to my shadow that has fallen upon the wall.

P013.L03

Yes, previously only one consolation or little make-believe consolation had remained for me.

P013.L04

Within the four walls of my room I painted on pen cases, and passed the time with this ridiculous amusement.

P013.L05

But after I saw those two eyes, after I saw her, the meaning, sense, and value of every movement and motion altogether fell away in my estimation.

P013.L06

But what is strange, what is unbelievable, is that I do not know why the subject of the scene in all my paintings has from the beginning been of one kind and one form!

P013.L07

I always drew a cypress tree beneath which a hunchbacked old man, resembling the yogis of India, had wrapped a cloak around himself, sat squatting, tied a turban around his head, and placed the forefinger of his left hand against his lips in astonishment.

P013.L08

Opposite him a girl in a long black dress was bending forward and offering him a morning-glory flower—because a stream of water separated them.

P013.L09

Had I seen this scene before, or had it been inspired in me in a dream?

P013.L10

I do not know; I know only that whatever I painted, it was always this same scene and this same subject.

P013.L11

My hand drew this picture without will, and stranger still, buyers were found for this design,

P013.L12

and I even sent these pen-case covers to India through my uncle, who sold them and sent me the money.
