Opiumتریاک

زیرا بشر هنوز چاره و دوائی برایش پیدا نکرده و تنها داروی آن فراموشی به‌توسط شراب و خواب مصنوعی به‌وسیلهٔ افیون و مواد مخدره است؛

because humankind has not yet found a remedy or medicine for it, and its only medicine is forgetfulness through wine and artificial sleep by means of opium and narcotic substances;

بعد از او من دیگر خودم را از جرگهٔ آدمها، از جرگهٔ احمقها و خوشبختها به‌کلی بیرون کشیدم و برای فراموشی به شراب و تریاک پناه بردم.

After her I withdrew myself completely from the circle of people, from the circle of fools and fortunate people, and for forgetfulness I took refuge in wine and opium.

همهٔ وقتم وقف نقاشی روی جلد قلمدان و استعمال مشروب و تریاک می‌شد،

I lit the lamp, went into the dark back closet of my room, and searched every corner in the hope of finding something to his liking—although I knew there was nothing in the house, for I had neither opium nor liquor left.

چند پک وافور کشیدم و در عالم خلسه به‌عکسها خیره شدم، چون می‌خواستم افکار خودم را جمع کنم؛

I took several puffs from the opium pipe and, in a state of trance, stared at the pictures, because I wanted to gather my thoughts;

و فقط دود اثیری تریاک بود که می‌توانست افکار مرا جمع‌آوری کند و استراحت فکری برایم تولید بکند.

and only the ethereal smoke of opium could gather my thoughts and give me mental rest.

هرچه تریاک برایم مانده بود کشیدم تا این افیون غریب همهٔ مشکلات و پرده‌هایی که جلو چشم مرا گرفته بود،

I smoked all the opium that remained to me so that this strange opium might, all the difficulties and veils that had covered my eyes,

حکیم‌باشی با سه قبضه ریش آمد، دستور داد که من تریاک بکشم.

The physician came with his three fistfuls of beard and ordered that I smoke opium.
