- Scene 3: The house among ruins and the pen-case motif
Who and what is here
For the illustration Seen through a small square hole in a wall: the girl in black bending toward the old man beneath a cypress, a stream between them.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
To reach the shelf I put a stool that was there under my feet; but just as I came to take the flask, suddenly my eyes fell outside through the shelf’s ventilation opening;
I saw that in the open ground behind my room a hunchbacked old man sat under a cypress tree, and a young girl—no, a heavenly angel—stood bent before him and offered him a blue morning glory with her right hand,
while the old man gnawed the nail of the forefinger of his left hand.
The girl was directly opposite me, but it seemed that she paid no attention at all to her surroundings.
She looked without having looked; a dazed and involuntary smile had dried at the corner of her lips, as though she were thinking of an absent person.
It was from there that I saw her terrible, bewitching eyes, eyes that seemed to cast a bitter reproach at a person, her anxious, astonished, threatening and promising eyes,
and the ray of my life mingled with these bright, meaningful hollows and was absorbed in their depths.
This alluring mirror drew all my being toward itself, to a point beyond the power of human thought.
Her slanting Turkmen eyes, which possessed a supernatural and intoxicating radiance, at once frightened and attracted,
as though with her eyes she had seen frightening and supernatural sights that not everyone could see;
prominent cheekbones, a high forehead, thin joined eyebrows, half-open fleshy lips, lips that seemed to have just parted from a long warm kiss yet were not satisfied.
Disheveled black, untidy hair surrounded her moonlike face, and one strand of it clung to her temple.
The delicacy of her limbs and the ethereal indifference of her movements told of her frailty and transience.
Only a dancing girl of an Indian temple could have had her rhythmic movements.
Her dejected state and sorrowful gaiety—all this showed that she was unlike ordinary people.
Indeed, her beauty was not ordinary. She appeared to me like a scene from an opium dream...
She produced in me that same heat of the love of the mandrake.
Her slender, elongated figure, with a proportioned line descending from her shoulder, arm, breasts, chest, buttocks and calves,
was as though her body had been pulled from her mate’s embrace; she was like the female mandrake separated from her mate.
She wore a pleated black dress that fitted closely and clung to her body.
When I looked, it seemed she wanted to leap over the stream separating her from the old man; but she could not.
Then the old man burst into laughter. It was a dry, offensive laugh that made the hair on a person’s body stand up.
He gave a harsh, two-toned, mocking laugh without his face changing.
It was like the echo of a laugh that had come from an emptiness.
