The flask of old wineبغلی شراب کهنه

ناگهان نگاهم به بالای رف افتاد گویا به من الهام شد، دیدم یک بغلی شراب کهنه که به من ارث رسیده بود ـ گویا به مناسبت تولد من این شراب را انداخته بودند ـ بالای رف بود.

Suddenly my gaze fell on the high shelf, as though it were revealed to me; I saw that a flask of old wine that I had inherited—apparently they had made this wine on the occasion of my birth—was on the shelf.

برای اینکه دستم به رف برسد چهارپایه‌ای را که آنجا بود زیر پایم گذاشتم؛ ولی همین که آمدم بغلی را بردارم ناگهان از سوراخ هواخور رف چشمم به بیرون افتاد؛

To reach the shelf I put a stool that was there under my feet; but just as I came to take the flask, suddenly my eyes fell outside through the shelf’s ventilation opening;

من در حالی که بغلی شراب دستم بود هراسان از روی چهارپایه پایین جستم.

With the wine flask in my hand, I jumped down from the stool in alarm.

بغلی شراب را زمین گذاشتم و سرم را میان دو دستم گرفتم.

I placed the wine flask on the ground and took my head between my two hands.

همینکه به خودم آمدم بغلی شراب را برداشتم، وارد اطاق شدم، دیدم عمویم رفته و لای در اطاق را مثل دهن مرده باز گذاشته بود.

As soon as I came to myself I took the flask of wine and entered the room; I saw that my uncle had gone and left the door of the room ajar like a dead person’s mouth.

فردای آنروز بالاخره با هزار ترس و لرز تصمیم گرفتم بغلی شراب را دوباره سر جایش بگذارم.

The day after that, at last, with a thousand fears and tremblings, I decided to put the flask of wine back in its place.

اما مثل اینکه به من الهام شد؛ بالای رف یک بغلی شراب کهنه که از پدرم به من ارث رسیده بود داشتم.

But it was as though I received an inspiration; on the high shelf I had a flask of old wine that I had inherited from my father.

چهارپایه را گذاشتم، بغلی شراب را پایین آوردم، پاورچین پاورچین کنار تختخواب رفتم، دیدم مانند بچهٔ خسته و کوفته‌ای خوابیده بود.

I set down the stool, brought down the flask of wine, went tiptoe, tiptoe beside the bed, and saw that she was sleeping like a tired, worn-out child.

سر بغلی را باز کردم و یک پیاله شراب از لای دندانهای کلیدشده‌اش آهسته در دهان او ریختم.

I opened the flask and slowly poured a cup of wine into her mouth through her clenched teeth.

و آنگهی مدتها بود که منتظر بودم به دست داروغه بیفتم. ولی تصمیم داشتم که قبل از دستگیر شدنم پیاله شراب زهرآلود را که سر رف بود به یک جرعه بنوشم.

And besides, for a long time I had been waiting to fall into the hands of the police chief. But I had decided that before being arrested I would drink in one gulp the cup of poisoned wine that was on the shelf.

ولی قبل از اینکه به دست آنها بیفتم یک پیاله از آن بغلی شراب، از شراب موروثی خودم که سر رف گذاشته‌ام خواهم خورد.

but before falling into their hands I will drink a cup from that flask of wine, from my inherited wine that I have placed upon the shelf.

دایه‌ام گفت وقت خداحافظی مادرم یک بغلی شراب ارغوانی که در آن زهر دندان ناگ ـ مار هندی ـ حل شده بود برای من به‌دست عمه‌ام می‌سپارد.

My nurse said that at parting my mother entrusted to my aunt, for me, a flask of purple wine in which the venom of the fang of a nag—an Indian snake—had been dissolved.
