The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
In the new world in which I had awakened, its surroundings and condition were completely familiar and close to me, so much so that I was more accustomed to it than to my former life and surroundings.
It was as though it were the reflection of my true life. Another world, but so close and connected to me that it seemed I had returned to my original surroundings.
I had been born in an ancient world, yet one that was at the same time closer and more natural.
It was still twilight. A tallow lamp was burning on the shelf of my room; bedding was also lying in the corner of the room.
But I was awake; I felt that my body was hot and spots of blood were stuck to my cloak and neck scarf. My hands were bloody.
But despite the fever and dizziness, a particular kind of anxiety and agitation had arisen in me, stronger than the thought of erasing the traces of blood, stronger than the possibility that the police chief might come and arrest me.
And besides, for a long time I had been waiting to fall into the hands of the police chief. But I had decided that before being arrested I would drink in one gulp the cup of poisoned wine that was on the shelf.
It was this need to write that had become a kind of compulsory duty for me. I wanted to pull out this demon that had been tormenting me from within for so long.
I wanted to put the fullness of my heart onto paper. Finally, after a little hesitation, I drew the tallow lamp toward me and began in this way:
