- Scene 25: Her face on the jar
Who and what is here
For the illustration A man before a glowing brazier and the two portraits, his body dissolving into smoke and a falling shaft of darkness.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
Finally I placed my own drawing beside the painting on the jar, then went and prepared my special brazier,
and when the fire glowed, I brought it and placed it before the paintings.
I took several puffs from the opium pipe and, in a state of trance, stared at the pictures, because I wanted to gather my thoughts;
and only the ethereal smoke of opium could gather my thoughts and give me mental rest.
I smoked all the opium that remained to me so that this strange opium might, all the difficulties and veils that had covered my eyes,
all those distant gray and dense memories, scatter [them].
It brought the state for which I had been waiting, and it was beyond my expectation.
Little by little my thoughts became precise, large, and enchanting, in a
I sank into a state of half-sleep and half-unconsciousness; then it was as if the pressure and weight upon my chest were lifted;
as if the law of gravity did not exist for me, and I was freely flying after my thoughts, which had become large, delicate, and penetrating.
A kind of deep and indescribable pleasure enveloped me from head to foot. I had been freed from the constraint of the burden of my body.
A peaceful world, but full of enchanting and pleasant shapes and colors... Then the thread of my thoughts broke apart and dissolved into these colors and shapes.
I was immersed in waves filled with ethereal caresses. I heard the sound of my heart; I felt the movement of my artery.
This state was full of meaning and pleasure for me. From the bottom of my heart I wanted and wished to surrender myself to the sleep of forgetfulness.
If this forgetfulness could become possible! If it could last!
If my eyes, as they closed, could slowly pass beyond sleep into sheer nothingness, and I did not feel my own existence!
If it were possible for all my being to mingle with a blot of ink, with a musical melody and a colored ray, and then for those waves and shapes to become so large and spread so far that they were entirely effaced and vanished, I would have attained my wish.
Little by little a state of languor and numbness came over me, like a kind of pleasant fatigue or gentle waves seeping out of my body.
Then I felt that my life was moving backward. Gradually I saw the states and events of the past and the erased and forgotten memories of my childhood.
Not only did I see them, but I participated in those events and felt them. Moment by moment I became smaller and more childlike.
Then suddenly my thoughts grew dim and dark. It seemed to me that all my existence was hanging from a thin hook and that I was suspended at the bottom of a deep and dark well.
Then I was freed from the hook. I slipped and moved away but struck no obstacle. It was an endless precipice in an eternal night.
After that, faded and erased curtains appeared one after another before my eyes. I passed through one instant of utter forgetfulness.
When I came to myself, suddenly I found myself in a small room, in a particular condition that seemed strange to me and at the same time natural.
