The Blind Owl · scene 25 of 77 · part one

Her face on the jar

The driver vanishes before he can pay him; by lamplight the narrator wipes the jar and finds, inside a border of blue morning glories, the painted face of the woman with her accusing eyes. He compares it with his drawing: they are identical, as if by the same wretched pen-case painter.

The text of the scene

The hearse stopped; I picked up the jar and jumped down from the carriage. I was before the door of my house.

P075.L02

I hurried into my room, put the jar on the table, went and took the tin box—the same tin box that was my money box and that I had hidden in the back closet of my room—

P075.L03

and came to the doorway to give the box to the old driver in place of wages. But he had vanished. No trace of him or his carriage could be seen.

P075.L04

Disappointed, I returned to my room again, lit the lamp, took the jar out of the handkerchief, and wiped the dust from it with my sleeve.

P075.L05

The jar had an old transparent violet glaze that had taken on the color of a crushed golden wasp

and one side of its body had a diamond-shaped border of blue morning glories, and inside it—inside the diamond border—her face, the face of a woman, had been painted

P075.L07

whose eyes were large and black, larger than ordinary eyes, accusing eyes. As if I had committed unpardonable sins of which I myself did not know.

P075.L08

Bewitching eyes which at the same time were anxious and astonished, threatening and promising.

P075.L09

These eyes frightened and attracted, and an intoxicating supernatural ray shone in their depths.

She had prominent cheekbones, a high forehead, thin joined eyebrows, half-open fleshy lips, and untidy hair, one strand of which clung to her temples.

P076.L01

I took the picture I had drawn of her last night out of the tin box and compared them; it differed not a particle from the painting on the jar, as though they were copies of each other.

P076.L02

Both of them were one and the same, indeed the work of one wretched painter of pen cases.

P076.L03

Perhaps the spirit of the jar painter had entered me while I was drawing, and my hand had come under his control.

P076.L04

It was not possible to distinguish them from one another; only my painting was on paper, whereas the painting on the jar had an old transparent glaze

P076.L05

which had given this image a mysterious spirit, a strange extraordinary spirit, and the spark of a wicked spirit shone in the depth of her eye.

P076.L06

No, it was unbelievable! The same large thoughtless eyes, the same reserved and at the same time free expression!
