- Scene 10: Eyes like black diamond in tears
Who and what is here
For the illustration The corpse's eyes wide open in grey dawn light, the painter's brush frozen mid-stroke.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
It was half-light; a dull light had entered my room through the windowpanes.
I was working on a picture that seemed to me better than all the others, but the eyes,
those eyes that had a reproachful expression, as though I had committed unforgivable sins!
I could not put those eyes on paper. All at once the whole life and memory of those eyes was erased from my mind.
My effort was futile. However much I looked at her face, I could not recall its expression.
Suddenly I saw that at that moment her cheeks gradually flushed; a dark liver-red color, like the color of meat in front of a butcher’s shop, came to life,
and her excessively open, astonished eyes, eyes in which all the radiance of life had taken shape and which shone with a sickly light,
her sick, reproaching eyes opened very slowly and looked at my face.
For the first time she became aware of me; she looked at me, and her eyes closed again.
This occurrence perhaps lasted no more than a moment, but it was enough for me to capture the expression of her eyes and put it on paper.
With the tip of the brush I drew this expression, and this time I did not tear up the drawing.
Afterwards I rose from my place and slowly approached her; I imagined she was alive, had come to life,
that my love had breathed a soul into her body. But up close I smelled a corpse, the smell of a decomposed corpse.
Small worms writhed together on her body, and two golden wasp-flies flew around her in the candlelight.
She was completely dead, but why and how had her eyes opened? I do not know.
Had I seen it in a dream? Had it really happened? I do not want anyone to ask me this question.
