Who and what is here
For the illustration Close on the girl's face on the bed, enormous black eyes half closing, a finger at her lips.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
Was she ill? Had she lost her way? She had come without will, like a sleepwalker.
At this moment—no being can imagine the states through which I passed. I felt a kind of pleasant, inexpressible pain.
No, I had not been deceived. This was the same woman, the same girl who had entered my room without surprise, without a single word.
I had always imagined to myself that our first meeting would be like this.
This state had for me the force of a deep, endless sleep—for one must go into a very deep sleep to be able to see such a dream—
and this silence had for me the force of an eternal life, because in the state of pre-eternity and eternity one cannot speak.
For me she was at once a woman, and she had something beyond human about her.
Her face brought me a bewildering forgetting of the faces of all other people, so that looking at her made my body tremble and my knees go weak.
At this moment I saw the whole painful story of my life behind her large eyes, her immeasurably large eyes, wet and shining, like a sphere of black diamond placed in tears.
In her eyes, in her black eyes, I found the eternal night and dense darkness I had been seeking, and I was submerged in their terrifying, enchanting blackness.
It was as though a force were being drawn out of my being. The earth beneath my feet trembled, and if I had fallen I would have experienced an indescribable pleasure.
My heart stopped; I held back my breath; I was afraid to breathe lest she disappear like a cloud or smoke.
Her silence had the force of a miracle. It was as though a crystal wall had been drawn between us.
From this moment, from this hour and until eternity, I was suffocating.
Her tired eyes, as though she had seen something unnatural that not everyone can see, as though she had seen death, slowly came together; her eyelids closed,
and I, like a drowning person who comes to the surface after struggling and agonizing, shook from the intensity of the fever's heat and wiped the sweat on my forehead with the end of my sleeve.
Her face had the same calm and motionless expression, but it seemed to have become more wasted and thinner.
She lay there just so, biting the nail of the index finger of her left hand,
her face was moon-colored, and through the thin black garment clinging to her body the outlines of her lower legs, arms, both sides of her chest, and her whole body were visible.
I bent down to see her better, because her eyes had closed.
But however much I looked at her face, it was as though she were entirely far away from me.
Suddenly I felt that I knew nothing whatever of what was concealed in her heart and that no connection existed between us.
I wanted to say something; but I feared that her ears, her sensitive ears, which must have been accustomed to a distant, heavenly, gentle music, would be repelled by my voice.
