The black-clad figure on the doorstep

Returning from his last rainy walk in thick fog, he finds a woman in black seated on the platform at his door and recognizes her eyes by the flare of a match. She rises as if she knows the way, walks into his room and lies down on his bed like a sleepwalker.

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P029.L01

On the last night when, as every night, I went out walking, the sky was overcast and rainy, and a thick mist had spread all around.

P029.L02

In rainy weather, which diminishes the harshness of colors and the shamelessness of the outlines of objects, I felt a kind of freedom and ease, and it was as though the rain washed my dark thoughts.

P029.L03

On this night, what ought not to happen happened.

P029.L04

I was wandering without will.

P029.L05

But in these hours of solitude, these minutes whose exact duration I do not remember, far more intensely than ever her terrifying, indistinct face, as though appearing from behind cloud and smoke, her motionless and expressionless face, like the paintings on pen-case covers, was present before my eyes.

P030.L01

When I returned, I think much of the night had passed and a dense fog had gathered in the air, so that I could not properly see immediately in front of my feet.

P030.L02

But by habit, by a particular feeling that had awakened in me, when I reached the front of my house I saw a black-clad figure, the figure of a woman, sitting on the platform at my doorway.

P031.L01

I struck a match to find the keyhole, but I do not know why my eyes involuntarily turned toward the black-clad figure!

P031.L02

And I recognized two slanting eyes, two large black eyes set in a thin, moonlike face, those very eyes that stared at a person’s face without looking.

P031.L03

Even if I had not seen her before, I would have recognized her. No, I had not been deceived. This black-clad figure was she.

P031.L04

Like a person who dreams and knows that it is a dream and wishes to wake but cannot, I stood stunned and dazed, frozen in my place.

P031.L05

The match burned to its end and burned my fingers; then suddenly I came to myself, turned the key in the lock, the door opened, and I drew aside.

P031.L06

She rose from the platform like someone who knew the way, passed through the dark passage, opened the door of my room, and I too entered my room behind her.

P031.L07

In confusion I lit the lamp; I saw that she had gone and lain down on my bed. Her face lay in shadow.

P031.L08

I did not know whether she could see me or not! Whether she could hear my voice or not! Apparently she showed neither fear nor a wish to resist. It was as though she had come without will.
