Who and what is here
For the illustration A lone figure kneeling in moonlight among rubbish heaps, a dog sniffing at a horse's rib bone.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
Could I abandon it entirely? But it was not in my power.
From then on, like a soul under torture, however much I waited, however much I kept watch, however much I searched, it was of no use.
I went over all the surroundings of our house, not for one day or two, but for two months and four days; like murderers returning to the scene of their crime, every day toward sunset I wandered around our house like a decapitated chicken, so that I knew every stone and pebble around it.
But I found no trace of the cypress tree, the stream, or the people I had seen there.
So many nights I knelt in the moonlight; I implored the trees, the stones, and the moon—which perhaps had looked upon us—and called on every being for help, but I saw not the slightest trace of her.
I came to understand that all these actions were useless, because she could have no relationship or attachment to the things of this world.
For example, the water with which she washed her hair must have come from an unknown, singular spring or an enchanted cave.
Her garment was not woven from ordinary silk and cotton, and material hands, human hands, had not sewn it.
I understood that those morning-glory flowers had not been ordinary flowers.
I became certain that if ordinary water struck her face it would wither, and if she picked an ordinary morning glory with her long, delicate fingers, her finger would wither like a flower petal.
This girl—no, this angel—was for me a source of indescribable wonder and inspiration.
I am certain that the gaze of a stranger, an ordinary person, would make her abashed and withered.
From the time I lost her, from the time a heavy wall, a damp barrier without an opening and as heavy as lead, was drawn between her and me, I felt that my life was forever futile and lost.
Although the caress of the gaze and the deep pleasure I had taken from seeing her were one-sided and had no answer for me—because she had not seen me—I needed these eyes,
and just one glance from her was enough to solve for me all philosophical difficulties and divine riddles.
With one glance from her, no mystery or secret remained for me.
From then on I increased the amount of alcohol and opium I consumed. But alas!
Instead of these medicines of despair paralyzing and numbing my thoughts, instead of my forgetting, day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute, the thought of her, her figure, her face appeared before me much more intensely than before.
Whether my eyes were open or I closed them, in sleep and wakefulness, she was before me.
From through the opening of the back closet of my room, like a night that had enveloped people’s thought and reason, from through the square hole opening to the outside, she was constantly before my eyes.
Rest had been forbidden to me. How could I have rest?
Every day, just at sunset, I had become accustomed to going for a walk.
I do not know why I wanted, and insisted, to find the stream, the cypress tree, and the morning-glory bush.
Just as I had become accustomed to opium, I had likewise become accustomed to this walk, as though a force compelled me to do it.
Throughout the way I thought only of her, remembering the first time I had seen her.
I wanted to find the place where I had seen her on the day of Sizdah Bedar.
If I found that place, if I could sit under that cypress tree, surely a calm would arise in my life.
But alas, apart from refuse and hot sand, a horse’s rib bone, and a dog sniffing at rubbish heaps, there was nothing else.
I had only seen her furtively and secretly through a hole, through a wretched opening in the back closet of my room.
Like a hungry dog sniffing and searching through rubbish heaps.
But as soon as a basket is brought from afar, it goes and hides in fear, then returns to search for its tasty morsels in the fresh rubbish.
I was in the same state, but this opening had been blocked.
To me she was a fresh bouquet of flowers thrown onto a rubbish heap.
