Who and what is here
For the illustration A man on a stool pounding with his fists on a blank, dark wall by lamplight.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
Several times I wanted to go and look through the opening in the wall, but I was afraid of the sound of the old man’s laughter.
The day after that, at last, with a thousand fears and tremblings, I decided to put the flask of wine back in its place.
But as soon as I pulled aside the curtain in front of the back closet and looked, the black, dark wall was before me, like the very darkness that had enveloped my entire life.
There was absolutely no hole or opening to the outside to be seen.
The square opening in the wall had been completely blocked and had become of the same substance as the wall.
I pulled the stool forward; but however frantically I struck the wall with my fists and listened, or looked by the lamp, not the slightest trace of the wall opening could be seen, and my blows had no effect on the thick, massive wall.
