- Scene 4: The uncle arrives on the thirteenth of Nowruz
Who and what is here
For the illustration An empty room at dusk with a smoking lamp and a door left gaping open.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
With the wine flask in my hand, I jumped down from the stool in alarm.
I do not know why I was trembling. It was a kind of trembling filled with terror and pleasure.
As though I had sprung out of a pleasant and frightening dream.
I placed the wine flask on the ground and took my head between my two hands.
Did it last a few minutes, a few hours? I do not know.
As soon as I came to myself I took the flask of wine and entered the room; I saw that my uncle had gone and left the door of the room ajar like a dead person’s mouth.
But the resonance of the old man’s dry laugh was still sounding in my ears.
The air was growing dark, the lamp was smoking, but the pleasurable and frightening trembling I had felt within myself still had its effect.
One glance was enough for that heavenly angel, that ethereal girl, to leave her effect upon me to an extent beyond human understanding.
At this time I had become beside myself; it was as though I had known her name before.
The spark of her eyes, her color, her scent, her movements all seemed familiar to me.
As though my soul in a previous life, in the world of forms, had been beside her soul, had been of one origin and one substance, and we were meant to have joined together.
I never wanted to touch her; only the invisible rays coming out of our bodies and mingling together were enough.
This terrifying occurrence, which at the first glance seemed familiar to me.
Do two people in love not always have this same feeling, that they have seen each other before, that a mysterious relationship has existed between them?
In this lowly world I wanted either her love or the love of no one.
But the old man’s dry and offensive laugh—this ominous laugh—tore apart the connection between us.
