Who and what is here
For the illustration A drawing being laid in a tin box as pale dawn enters the window.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
and now I had these eyes; I had the soul of her eyes on paper, and her body was no longer of use to me,
this body condemned to nonexistence and to become food for worms and underground mice!
Now, from this point on, she was at my disposal, not I her dependent.
With the greatest care I took the drawing, placed it in my tin box where I kept my money, and hid it in the back closet of my room.
The night was leaving on tiptoe, as though it had rested enough,
faint sounds from far away could be heard; perhaps a fowl or a passing bird was dreaming, perhaps plants were growing.
At this time the pale stars were disappearing behind masses of clouds.
I felt the gentle breath of morning on my face, and at that moment a rooster’s crow rose from afar.
