- Scene 19: The hearse through the geometric country
Who and what is here
For the illustration Night road: twisted trees joining branches, the hearse passing faintly glowing geometric houses.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
The whip cracked in the air. The horses set off, breathing heavily. They took long and gentle strides.
Their legs were placed slowly and soundlessly on the ground. The bells on their necks rang in a particular rhythm in the damp air.
From behind the cloud the stars looked down at the earth like the sockets of shining eyes emerging from black clotted blood.
A pleasant ease enveloped me from head to foot. Only the vase pressed on my chest like the weight of a dead body.
The twisting trees with their crooked branches seemed to have taken one another’s hands in the darkness for fear of slipping and falling.
Strange houses in broken geometric shapes, with deserted black windows, had lined up in rows beside the road.
But the surface of the wall of this house gave off a dim and sickly glow like a firefly.
The trees passed in frightening groups and rows and fled after one another. Yet it seemed that the stems of the morning glories coiled around their feet and they fell.
The smell of the dead, the smell of decomposed flesh, had taken hold of my whole being; as though the smell of the dead had always penetrated my body
and all my life I had lain in a black coffin, while a hunchbacked old man whose face I could not see carried me around among the mist and passing shadows.
