The grave by the dry river; the Ragha jar

I put my hand into my pocket to pay the carriage driver’s fare; there were no more than two qerans and one abbasi in my pocket.

P061.L02

The carriage driver gave a dry, offensive laugh and said:

P061.L03

“It is not worthy of you; I will take it later. I know your house; you have no more business with me, eh...?

P061.L04

Just know that I am not without experience in grave digging, eh...?

P061.L05

There is nothing to be ashamed of. Come; right here near the river beside the cypress tree I will dig a hole the size of the suitcase for you, and go.”

P062.L01

The old man jumped down from his seat with a peculiar agility that I could not have imagined.

P062.L02

I picked up the suitcase, and the two of us went beside the trunk of a tree that was near a dried-up river.

P062.L03

He said, “Is it good here?”

P062.L04

And without waiting for my answer, he began digging with the little spade and pickaxe he had with him.

P062.L05

I put the suitcase on the ground and stood dumbfounded where I was.

P062.L06

The old man, with a bent back and the agility of an old hand, was busy [at work].

P062.L07

In the course of digging he found something resembling a glazed jar; he wrapped it in a dirty handkerchief, stood up, and said:

P062.L08

“Here is the hole, eh..., exactly the size of the suitcase; it does not differ by a hair, eh...”

P063.L01

I put my hand in my pocket to give him his wages. I had no more than two qerans and one abbasi.

P063.L02

The old man gave a dry, nauseating laugh and said:

P063.L03

“No need, it is not worthy of you. I know your house, eh;

P063.L04

besides, instead of my wages I found a jar, a Ragha vase, belonging to the ancient city of Ray, eh...”

P064.L01

Then he laughed with his bent, hunchbacked figure, so that his shoulders shook.

P064.L02

He held beneath his arm the jar that he had tied inside a wrinkled handkerchief, went toward the hearse, and with a peculiar agility took his place on the seat.

P064.L03

The whip cracked in the air; the horses set off breathing heavily,

P064.L04

the sound of the bells around their necks rang in a particular rhythm in the damp air, and little by little [the carriage] disappeared from my sight behind a mass of mist.
