One last look into the suitcase

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

As soon as I was alone I breathed a sigh of relief; it was as if a heavy burden had been lifted from my chest and a pleasant calm encompassed me from head to foot.

P065.L02

I looked around me; this was a small enclosed place caught between hills and blue mountains.

P065.L03

On a mountain ridge the remains of ancient buildings made with thick mud bricks could be seen, and a dry river nearby.

P065.L04

This place was secluded, remote, and without noise.

P065.L05

I was happy from the bottom of my heart, and thought to myself that these large eyes, when they awakened from earthly sleep, would find a place appropriate to their structure and appearance;

P065.L06

besides, she had to be far from other people, far from other people’s dead, just as in her life she had been apart from other people’s lives.

I carefully lifted the suitcase and placed it in the hole. The hole was exactly the size of the suitcase, not differing by a hair.

P066.L02

But for the last time I wanted to look inside it—inside the suitcase—just once.

P066.L03

I looked around; not a soul was visible. I took the key out of my pocket and opened the suitcase.

P066.L04

But when I pushed aside the corner of her black dress, among the clotted blood and the worms writhing together, I saw two large black eyes

P066.L05

that, without expression, stared fixedly at me, and my life had drowned in the depths of those eyes.

P066.L06

Hurriedly I closed the suitcase and poured earth over it; then I stamped the earth firm with my foot,

P066.L07

I went and brought scentless blue morning-glory plants and planted them in its earth,

P066.L08

then I brought pebbles and gravel and scattered them on top, so that every trace of the grave would disappear and no one could distinguish it.

P066.L09

I did this so well that even I could not distinguish her grave from the rest of the ground.
