The Blind Owl · scene 22 of 77 · part one

The spreading bloodstain

His clothes are torn and caked with blood, wasp-flies circle him and worms cling to him; rubbing the stain only spreads it over his body. He follows the hearse's wheel tracks until darkness erases them.

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P067.L01

When my work was finished I looked at myself and saw that my clothes were dusty and torn and black clotted blood had stuck to them,

P067.L02

two golden wasp-flies were flying around me, and little worms that writhed together had stuck to my body.

P067.L03

I wanted to clean the bloodstain on the skirt of my garment, but the more I moistened my sleeve with saliva and rubbed it, the more the bloodstain spread and thickened.

P067.L04

It seeped over my whole body, and I felt the slimy cold of blood upon my body.

P068.L01

It was near sunset; a fine rain was falling. Without willing it, I followed the tracks of the hearse’s wheels and set off.

P068.L02

As soon as it grew dark I lost the traces of the hearse’s wheels.

P068.L03

Without destination, thought, or will, I walked slowly in the dense, concentrated darkness and did not know where I would arrive!

P068.L04

For after her, after I had seen those great eyes amid the clotted blood, I was walking in a dark night, in a deep night that had enveloped my whole life,

P068.L05

because the two eyes that had served as its lamp had been extinguished forever, and so it was all the same to me whether I reached any place or refuge or never reached one.
