The Blind Owl · scene 29 of 77 · part two

Wine of my life for the shadow's throat

He will press his life like grapes and drip its bitter wine into the dry throat of his bent shadow. Yesterday a sick young man, today he is a white-haired hunchback with a harelip, unsure whether he sits in Nishapur, Balkh or Benares.

Who and what is here

For the illustration A bunch of grapes squeezed above the open mouth of a shadow on the wall.

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P085.L01

I always thought that silence was the best of things. I thought that it was better for a person, like the butimar beside the sea, to spread his wings and sit alone.

P085.L02

But now it is no longer in my control, because what should not have happened has happened. Who knows? Perhaps right now, or in another hour, a band of drunken constables will come to arrest me!

P085.L03

I have no desire at all to save my own carcass; besides, no room for denial remains, even supposing I were to erase the spots of blood;

P085.L04

but before falling into their hands I will drink a cup from that flask of wine, from my inherited wine that I have placed upon the shelf.

P086.L01

Now I want to squeeze the whole of my life in my hand like a bunch of grapes and drip its extract—no, its wine—drop by drop into the dry throat of my shadow, like holy earth-water.

P086.L02

I only want, before I leave, to put on paper the pains that have eaten me away little by little in the corner of this room like canker or a swelling; because by this means I can better arrange and order my thoughts.

P086.L03

Is my purpose to write a will? Never! For I have no property for the divan to devour, nor religion for the devil to carry off.

P086.L04

And besides, what thing on earth can have the smallest value for me? Whatever life has been I have lost; I let it go and wanted it to go from my hands...

P086.L05

And after I am gone, to hell with it! Whether someone reads my scraps of paper or does not read them for seventy black years.

P086.L06

I write only because of this need to write, which has for the present become necessary to me. I need, more than ever I need, to communicate my thoughts to my imaginary being, to my shadow.

P086.L07

This ominous shadow, bent upon the wall before the light of the tallow lamp, that seems to read carefully and swallow whatever I write.

P086.L08

This shadow surely understands better than I do! Only with my own shadow can I speak well. It is the one that compels me to speak. Only it can know me; surely it understands.

P087.L01

I want to drip the extract—no, the bitter wine—of my life, drop by drop, into the dry throat of my shadow and say to it: “This is my life!”

P088.L01

Whoever saw me yesterday saw a broken and sick young man; but today sees a hunchbacked old man with white hair, inflamed eyes, and a harelip.

P088.L02

I am afraid to look outside through my room’s window, or to look at myself in the mirror. For everywhere I see multiplied shadows of myself.

P088.L03

But in order to explain my life to my bent shadow, I must recount a tale.

P088.L04

How many tales exist about childhood days, about love, intercourse, marriage and death, and not one is true. I am tired of stories and phrase-making.

P089.L01

I will try to squeeze this bunch, but will there be the slightest trace of truth in it or not?! That I no longer know.

P089.L02

I do not know where I am, nor whether this piece of sky above my head, or these few spans of ground on which I sit, belongs to Nishapur or Balkh or Benares.

P089.L03

In any case, I am certain of nothing.

P090.L01

I have seen so many contradictory things and heard so many different sorts of words, and the sight of my eyes has rubbed so much against the surfaces of different things,

P090.L02

this thin and hard layer behind which the spirit is hidden, that now I believe nothing.

P090.L03

Even now I doubt the weight and stability of things, the manifest and clear truths.

P090.L04

I do not know, if I strike my fingers against the stone mortar in the corner of our courtyard and ask it, “Are you fixed and solid?”

P090.L05

whether, if it answers yes, I should believe its word or not!

P091.L01

Am I a separate and distinct being? I do not know.

P091.L02

But now, when I looked in the mirror, I did not recognize myself.

P091.L03

No, that former “I” has died, has decomposed, but there is no barrier or obstacle between us.

P091.L04

I must tell my own story; but I do not know where one must begin!

P091.L05

All of life is tale and story.

P091.L06

I must squeeze the bunch of grapes and pour its juice, spoon by spoon, into the dry throat of this old shadow.

P092.L01

Where must one begin? For all the thoughts now boiling in my head belong to this very moment;

P092.L02

they have no hour, minute, or date.

P092.L03

An event of yesterday may be older and less affecting to me than an event of a thousand years ago.

P093.L01

Perhaps because all my ties with the world of the living have been cut, memories of the past take shape before me!

P093.L02

Past, future, hour, day, month, and year are all the same to me.

P093.L03

The various stages of childhood and old age are nothing to me but empty words.

P093.L04

Only for ordinary people, for the rabble—rajjaleh with a doubled consonant; this was the very word I was seeking—

P093.L05

for the rabble, whose life has a set season and limit, like the seasons of the year, and is situated in the temperate zone of life, does this hold true.

P093.L06

But my life has had only one season and one state; it is as if it has passed in a cold region and in eternal darkness,

P093.L07

while inside my body a flame is always burning and melting me like a candle.
