Who and what is here
For the illustration Cross-section of a cramped tomb-like room with a nail, a mirror and two tiny windows onto a sprawling city.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
Within the four walls that make up my room and the enclosure drawn around my life and thoughts,
my life melts away little by little like a candle—no, I am mistaken—
it is like a log of wet wood lying in a corner of the hearth, scorched and charred by the fire of the other logs,
but it has neither burned nor remained moist and fresh; it has only been suffocated by the smoke and fumes of others.
My room, like all rooms, is built of mud brick and brick upon the ruins of thousands of old houses,
it has whitewashed walls and an inscription border; it is exactly like a tomb;
the smallest features and details of my room are enough to occupy my thoughts for long hours, like the spider’s work in the corner of the wall.
For since I have been confined to bed, they attend less to my affairs.
A large stable nail driven into the wall was the place for the cradle of me and my wife, and perhaps afterward it too bore the weight of other children.
A little below the nail, a board has come loose from the wall plaster, and from beneath it one smells the things and beings that formerly were in this room,
so that up to now no current or wind has been able to disperse these stubborn, sluggish, dense odors:
the smell of bodily sweat, of old illnesses, of breath, of feet, of bodies, of urine, of rancid oil,
of rotten matting and burnt omelette, of fried onions, of decoctions, of mallow and a child’s diaper,
of the room of a boy newly come of religious age, of vapors entering from the alley, and smells that are dead or in their death throes,
all of which are still alive and have kept their identifying mark.
There are many other smells whose origin and source are unknown, but which have left their trace.
My room is a dark back closet and through two little windows has a connection with the outside, with the world of the rabble;
one of them opens toward our own courtyard and the other toward the alley;
from there it connects me with the city of Ray, a city they call the bride of the world, with thousands of winding alleys and battered houses,
and schools and caravanserais—a city reckoned the greatest city in the world, breathing and living behind my room.
Here in the corner of my room, when I close my eyes, the blurred, mingled shadows of the city—what has made an impression on me—
with its palaces, mosques, and gardens all take shape before my eyes.
These two windows connect me with the outside world, with the world of the rabble.
But in my room there is a mirror on the wall in which I see my own face.
In my limited life the mirror is more important than the world of the rabble, which has nothing to do with me.
