Who and what is here
For the illustration Through a small window: the butcher hanging carcasses on hooks as two lean black packhorses wait and a yellow dog looks on.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
Of the entire view of the city, there is a humble butcher’s shop before my room’s window, which uses up two sheep a day.
Every time I look outside through the window, I see the butcher.
Every morning early, two thin black packhorses, consumptive packhorses that give deep, dry coughs,
whose withered forelegs end in hooves, as though under a savage law their hands had been cut off and plunged into hot oil,
with sheep carcasses hanging from either side of them, are brought before the shop.
The butcher strokes his henna-dyed beard with his greasy hand; first he looks over the sheep carcasses with a buyer’s eye,
then chooses two of them, weighs their fat tails in his hand, then takes them and hangs them on the hooks in his shop.
Then the butcher these blood-covered bodies, with severed necks, staring eyes, and bloodied eyelids
that have protruded from their bruised skulls, caresses, handles,
then takes a bone-handled knife, carefully cuts their bodies into pieces, and sells the lean flesh to his customers with a smile.
With what pleasure he does all these things! I am certain he also gets a kind of delight and pleasure from it.
That thick-necked yellow dog too, which has made our neighborhood its territory and always looks longingly at the butcher’s hand with its head tilted and innocent eyes,
that dog knows all this too; that dog too knows that the butcher takes pleasure in his trade!
