Where the text names them
Of the entire view of the city, there is a humble butcher’s shop before my room’s window, which uses up two sheep a day.
with sheep carcasses hanging from either side of them, are brought before the shop.
The butcher strokes his henna-dyed beard with his greasy hand; first he looks over the sheep carcasses with a buyer’s eye,
They brought the thin black packhorses, with two sheep carcasses hanging on either side, coughing deeply and dryly.
The butcher ran his greasy hand over his moustache, examined the sheep with a buyer’s eye, and with difficulty carried two of them and hung them on the hooks in his shop.
He stroked the thighs of the sheep. No doubt last night, too, when he rubbed his hand over his wife’s body, he thought of sheep and wondered how much money he would earn if he killed his wife!
I had made this decision long before, but I did not know what there was in the butcher’s movements as they cut the sheep’s thighs into pieces, as he weighed them, and then looked at them admiringly, that made me involuntarily feel I wanted to imitate him.
Until now, when I looked at her, I had not properly noticed. At this moment it was as though a veil fell from before my eyes! I do not know why I remembered the sheep at the door of the butcher’s shop!
The boy ran out of the room. At that moment I understood why the butcher, for pleasure, wiped the bone-handled knife against the thighs of the sheep!
and from the sheep’s windpipes bloody fluid dripped onto the ground, drop by drop.
as did the heads of all the sheep, with eyes upon which the dust of death had settled: they too had seen, they too knew!
