The Blind Owl · scene 66 of 77 · part two

The harlot enters in all seven cosmetics

Amid kettledrums and fever, his wife comes in plump, made up and in a patterned tunic, her finger at her lips. He sees her suddenly as lean meat, no longer the ethereal girl of the Soren stream; he answers her mocking 'How are you?' harshly and she slams the door.

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P187.L01

There was a yellow sunlight; the burning sound of the kettledrum rose, a sound of helplessness and pleading that awakened all inherited superstitions and fear of darkness.

P187.L02

The crisis came, the state that had affected my heart beforehand and that I had been awaiting.

P187.L03

A burning heat had seized me from head to foot; I was suffocating. I went and fell into bed and closed my eyes.

P187.L04

From the intensity of the fever it was as if all things had grown large and acquired outline upon outline. The ceiling had risen instead of descending.

P187.L05

My clothes pressed against my body. For no reason I rose and sat up in my bed. I murmured to myself: “More than this is not possible… It is unbearable…”

P187.L06

Suddenly I fell silent. Then, slowly and aloud in a mocking tone, I said, “More than this…” and added, “I am a fool!”

P187.L07

I did not understand the meaning of the words I uttered. I merely amused myself with the vibration of my voice in the air. Perhaps I spoke to my own shadow to dispel my loneliness!

P187.L08

At that moment I saw something unbelievable. The door opened and that harlot came in. Apparently she sometimes thinks of me.

P187.L09

Still, there is something to be thankful for! She too knew that I was alive, that I was suffering and would slowly die. There was something to be thankful for.

P187.L10

I only wanted to know whether she knew that it was for her sake that I was dying! If she knew, then I would die at ease and happy. Then I would be the happiest of people on earth.

P187.L11

When this harlot entered my room, my bad thoughts fled. I do not know what rays emanated from her being, from her movements, that gave me relief!

P187.L12

This time she was in better health; she had grown plump and settled; she wore a gray arkhalogh [tunic] with a sanbuseh pattern; she had plucked beneath her eyebrows, put on a beauty spot, drawn on woad, and used rouge, white powder and kohl.

P187.L13

In short, she entered my room made up with all seven cosmetics. It was as though she was content with her own life, and involuntarily she put the forefinger of her left hand to her mouth.

P187.L14

Was this the same delicate woman, the same slender ethereal girl who wore a pleated black dress, with whom I played hide-and-seek beside the Soren stream? The same girl who had a free, childlike and fleeting manner, and whose sensual ankle showed from beneath the hem of her dress?

P187.L15

Until now, when I looked at her, I had not properly noticed. At this moment it was as though a veil fell from before my eyes! I do not know why I remembered the sheep at the door of the butcher’s shop!

P187.L16

For me she had become no more than a piece of lean meat and had entirely lost her former charm. She had become a settled, staid and respectable woman who thought of [household] life; a complete woman! My wife!

P187.L17

With fear and dread I saw that my wife had grown up and come of age, whereas I myself had remained in a state of childhood. In truth, I was ashamed before her face, before her eyes.

P187.L18

A woman who gave herself to everyone except me; and I consoled myself only with the illusory memory of her childhood.

P187.L19

The time when she had a simple childlike face, a faint and fleeting look, and the mark of the teeth of the old junk dealer at the corner could not yet be seen on her face. No, this was not the same person.

P188.L01

She asked mockingly, “How are you?”

P188.L02

I answered her, “Are you not free? Do you not do whatever your heart wants? What have you to do with my health?”

P188.L03

She slammed the door and left. She did not even turn back to look at me.

P188.L04

Apparently I had forgotten how to speak with the people of this world, with living people!

P188.L05

She, that very woman whom I thought devoid of every feeling, was hurt by this act of mine.
