The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
Several times I wanted to rise, go, fall at her hands and feet, weep, and ask forgiveness.
Yes, to weep, because I thought that if I could weep I would find relief. Did several minutes, several hours, or several centuries pass? I do not know!
I had become like the insane and took pleasure in my own pain, a pleasure beyond human, a pleasure only I could experience and that even gods, if they existed, could not experience to this degree.
At that time I realized my superiority; I felt my superiority over the rabble, nature, and gods—gods born of human lust.
I had become a god, had become greater even than God, because I felt an eternal and infinite current within myself…
But she came back again. She was not as hard-hearted as I had imagined.
I rose, kissed the hem of her dress, and, weeping and coughing, fell at her feet; I rubbed my face against her shin and called her several times by her real name.
It was as if her real name had a particular sound and resonance! But in my heart, at the bottom of my heart, I was saying, “Harlot… harlot!”
I embraced the muscles of her leg, which tasted like the end of a cucumber, bitter, mild, and astringent. I cried and cried; I do not know how much time passed!
When I came to myself I saw that she had gone. Perhaps it did not take even a moment for me to feel within myself all the pleasures, caresses, and pains of humanity,
and I remained in the same state, as when I sat by the opium apparatus, like the old junk dealer who sits before his wares, before a smoking oil lamp.
I did not move from my place; as I stared at the soot of the oil lamp, soot settled on my hands and face like black snow.
