Masks of soot in the mirror

The nurse screams and drops the supper tray at his blackened face; he rubs on more soot and makes faces in the mirror, finding the reciter, the butcher and his wife within himself. He bursts into the old man's laugh, coughs bloody phlegm onto the mirror and hides behind the closet curtain.

For the illustration A soot-blackened face distorted in a mirror smeared with blood, a terrified nurse behind him.

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P189.L13

When my nurse brought me a bowl of barley soup and chicken rice, she screamed out of fear and terror, stepped backward, and dropped the supper tray.

P189.L14

I was pleased that at least I had frightened her. Then I rose, struck the lampwick with the tongs, and went before the mirror and rubbed soot over my face.

P189.L15

What a frightening face! With my finger I pulled the corner of my eye and let go, stretched my mouth, puffed out my cheeks, lifted my beard from beneath and twisted it on both sides; I made faces.

P189.L16

What a capacity my face had for ridiculous and frightening expressions! It was as if by this means I could see laid bare all the ridiculous, frightening, unbelievable shapes hidden in my nature.

P189.L17

I recognized and felt these states within myself, and at the same time they seemed ridiculous to me. All these faces were in me and belonged to me.

P189.L18

Frightening, criminal, and laughable masks that changed with one movement of a fingertip.

P189.L19

The form of the old reciter, the butcher’s form, my wife’s form—I saw all of them in myself, as if their reflections had been in me!

P189.L20

All these faces had been within me, but none of them belonged to me.

P189.L21

Had not the substance and condition of my face been formed through some unknown stimulus, through inherited obsessions, sexual couplings, and disappointments?

P189.L22

And I, who was the keeper of this inherited burden, did not my mind involuntarily, through a mad and laughable feeling, attend to preserving these states in my face?

P189.L23

Perhaps only at the moment of death would my face be freed from the grip of this obsession and take on the natural state it ought to have!

P189.L24

But even in the final state, would not the expressions that my mocking will had continually carved upon my face leave their marks more firmly and deeply?

P189.L25

In any case I understood what things I was capable of doing! I discovered my capacities.

P189.L26

Suddenly I burst out laughing—what a rasping, offensive, terrifying laugh it was! The hairs on my body stood up, for I did not recognize my own voice.

P189.L27

Like a foreign voice, a laugh that had often twisted in the base of my throat, which I had heard close to my ear, it sounded in my ear.

P189.L28

Just then I began coughing and a piece of bloody phlegm, a piece of my liver, fell onto the mirror. I smeared it over the mirror with my fingertip.

P189.L29

When I turned I saw Naneh-Joon, with a pale moonlike complexion, disheveled hair, and dim frightened eyes, holding a bowl of barley soup, the same soup she had brought me, and staring at me blankly.

P189.L30

I held my hands before my face and went behind the curtain of the back closet and hid myself.
