The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

But Naneh-Joon had brought me the news; she had told everyone, “With a filthy beggar!”

P184.L02

My nurse said that lice had appeared in my wife’s bedding and that she herself had gone to the bathhouse.

P185.L01

What sort of shadow had hers been upon the sweating wall of the bathhouse? No doubt a lustful shadow, hopeful about itself!

P185.L02

But, on the whole, this time I did not dislike my wife’s taste, because the old junk dealer was not an ordinary, affected, insipid person like those worthless men who attract lustful, stupid women.

P185.L03

These pains, these layers of misery that had formed calluses upon the old man’s face and head, and the wretchedness that poured from around him,

P185.L04

perhaps he did not know it himself, but displayed him like a demigod, and with that filthy cloth spread before him he was the representative and embodiment of creation.

P186.L01

Yes, I had seen upon my wife’s face the marks of two yellow, decayed teeth between which Arabic verses issued.

P186.L02

This very woman who did not let me come near her, who humiliated me; yet despite all this I loved her.

P186.L03

Despite the fact that until now she had not let me kiss her lips even once!
