The Blind Owl · scene 45 of 77 · part two

By the Soren stream

Resting under an old cypress by the Soren stream, he sees a girl in black biting her left fingernail glide toward the fortress and vanish. He recalls a childhood Sizdah Bedar game of hide-and-seek here, when the harlot fell into the stream and he spied her body behind a cypress.

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P133.L01

When I came near the Soren stream, a bare, dry mountain appeared before me.

P133.L02

The mountain's hard, dry bulk reminded me of my nurse; I do not know what connection existed between them!

P133.L03

I passed beside the mountain and came to a small and pleasant enclosure surrounded by mountains. The ground was covered with blue morning-glory bushes, and on top of the mountain a tall fortress built of heavy bricks could be seen.

P134.L01

At that time I felt tired.

P134.L02

I went beside the Soren stream, sat on the sand in the shade of an old cypress tree.

P134.L03

It was a deserted, secluded place.

P134.L04

It seemed that nobody had ever set foot there.

P134.L05

Suddenly I noticed a little girl coming out from behind the cypress trees and going toward the fortress.

P134.L06

She wore a black dress that was woven with very thin and light warp and weft, apparently of silk.

P134.L07

She was biting the nail of her left hand and was gliding past with free and indifferent movement.

P134.L08

It seemed to me that I had seen and knew her.

P134.L09

But from this far distance, under the sun's rays, I could not make out how she suddenly disappeared!

P135.L01

I remained frozen in place, without being able to make the slightest movement.

P135.L02

But all at once I saw her with my bodily eyes passing before me and disappearing.

P135.L03

Was she a real being or an illusion?

P135.L04

Had I dreamed, or was I awake?

P135.L05

However much I tried to remember, it was useless.

P135.L06

I felt a particular shiver down my spine.

P135.L07

It seemed that at that hour all the shadows of the fortress upon the mountain had come to life and that the girl was one of the former inhabitants of ancient Ray.

P135.L08

Suddenly the scene before me seemed familiar.

P135.L09

I remembered one Sizdah Bedar day in my childhood when I had come to this very place; my mother-in-law and that harlot were also there.

P135.L10

How much we had run after one another and played behind the cypress trees that day!

P135.L11

Then a group of other children joined us, whom I do not remember well.

P135.L12

We were playing hide-and-seek.

P135.L13

Once, as I chased this very harlot near the same Soren stream, her foot slipped and she fell into the water.

P135.L14

They pulled her out and took her behind a cypress to change her clothes; I followed her.

P135.L15

They held a prayer chador in front of her, but from behind the tree I secretly saw her entire body.

P135.L16

She smiled and bit the forefinger of her left hand.

P135.L17

Then they wrapped a white covering around her and spread her black silk dress, woven of thin threads, in the sun.

P136.L01

Finally I lay down on the sand at the foot of the old cypress.

P136.L02

The sound of the water reached my ears like broken, incomprehensible words murmured in a dream.

P136.L03

Without willing it, I plunged my hands into the warm damp sand.

P136.L04

I squeezed the warm damp sand in my fist; it was like the firm flesh of a girl who had fallen in the water and whose clothes had been changed.
