A girl in a thin black silk dress who comes from behind the cypresses by the Soren stream, biting her left fingernail, and vanishes toward the fortress; he takes her for a former inhabitant of ancient Ray. Her gestures and dress echo the wife as a child (P135.L13-17), so she may be a vision of the wife.
