The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
I do not know how much time passed; when I rose from my place I set out without willing it.
A force not subject to my will compelled me to go.
I was not walking, but like that black-clad girl I glided on my feet and passed along.
When I came to myself I saw that I was in the city in front of my father-in-law's house.
I do not know why I happened to come to my father-in-law's house!
His little son—my brother-in-law—was sitting on the platform, like an apple cut in half with his sister.
He had slanting Turkmen eyes, prominent cheeks, a wheat-colored complexion, a sensual nose and a lean, well-formed face.
Sitting there, he had put the forefinger of his left hand in his mouth.
I went forward involuntarily, put my hand in my pocket, took out the cookies that were there, gave them to him and said, 'Shajoon gave these to you.' For he called my wife Shajoon in place of his own mother.
With his Turkmen eyes he looked in surprise at the cookies he held hesitantly.
I sat on the platform of the house, seated him in my lap and pressed him against myself.
His body was warm and his lower legs resembled those of my wife, and he had her same unconstrained movements.
His lips resembled his father's, but what repelled me in his father had, by contrast, attraction and pull for me in him; it was as though his half-open lips had just parted from a long, warm kiss.
I kissed his half-open mouth, which resembled my wife's lips.
His lips tasted of the end of a cucumber—bitter and astringent.
At that moment I saw his father—that hunchbacked old man wearing a scarf—come out of the house and pass without looking toward me.
He laughed in broken bursts, a frightening laugh that made a person's hair stand on end;
