The Blind Owl · scene 47 of 77 · part two

The headless shadow

Walking home at dusk past white geometric houses, he sees his shadow cast in moonlight without a head, an omen of death within the year. Home, his nose bleeds, he faints, and in bed he murmurs, 'Death... where are you?'

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P139.L05

It was nearing sunset. I got up, as though wishing to flee from myself.

P139.L06

Without willing it, I took the road home.

P139.L07

I saw no one and nothing;

P139.L08

it seemed I was moving through an unknown, unfamiliar city!

P139.L09

Strange houses of broken geometrical forms with dark abandoned openings surrounded me.

P139.L10

It was as though no living creature could ever have lived in them.

P139.L11

Yet their white walls shone with a faint light, and what was strange, what I could not believe, was that whenever I stood in front of one of these walls, my shadow was cast large and thick upon it in the moonlight, but without a head. My shadow had no head.

P139.L12

I had heard that if a person’s shadow had no head, that person would die before the end of the year.

P140.L01

Terrified, I entered my house and took refuge in my room.

P140.L02

At that very moment my nose began bleeding, and after much blood had flowed from it, I fell unconscious onto my bed.

P140.L03

My nurse began taking care of me.

P141.L01

Before going to sleep I looked at my face in the mirror and saw that my face had become worn, indistinct, and without spirit.

P141.L02

It was so indistinct that I did not recognize myself.

P141.L03

I went to bed, pulled the quilt over my head, turned over, turned my face toward the wall, drew up my legs, closed my eyes, and followed the continuation of my imaginings.

old, extinguished desires, desires effaced and stifled, come alive again and cry out for revenge.

P141.L07

At this time I became detached from nature and the outward world and was ready to be effaced and destroyed in the eternal current.

P141.L08

Several times I murmured to myself: “Death...
