The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
When my eyes closed, I saw that I was in the middle of Mohammadiyeh. They had erected a tall gallows and had hung the old junk dealer from in front of my room on the gallows.
Several drunken police officers were drinking wine at its foot.
My mother-in-law, with an inflamed face—with the face I now see when my wife is in a bad temper, when the color drains from her lips and her eyes become round and terrified—was pulling my hand, leading me through the crowd, pointing me out to the executioner, who wore red clothes, and saying: “Hang this one too.”
I woke from sleep in terror; I was burning like a furnace, my body was wet with sweat, and a burning heat flamed on my cheeks.
To free myself from this nightmare, I got up, drank water, and splashed a little on my head and face.
I lay down again, but sleep would not come to my eyes.
