- Scene 19: The hearse through the geometric country
Who and what is here
For the illustration A lone figure walking between blank geometric houses under a blazing sun.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
Early in the morning I rose, took two cookies that were on the shelf, and fled from the house in such a way that no one would notice,
I escaped from the misery that had seized me, without a definite purpose, through the lanes,
aimlessly I passed among rabble who all had greedy faces and ran after money and fame;
I had no need to see them, since one of them represented all the others.
They were all a mouth, with a bunch of intestines hanging after it, ending in their sexual organ.
Suddenly I felt that I had become more agile and lighter; the muscles of my legs had begun to move with a particular speed and nimbleness that I could not imagine.
I felt that I had escaped from all the bonds of life.
I raised my shoulders; this was my natural movement,
in childhood, whenever I was freed from the burden of some toil or responsibility, I made this same movement.
I entered deserted lanes; along my way gray-colored houses in strange geometrical shapes—cubes, prisms, cones—could be seen, with short, dark openings.
These openings seemed without doors or barriers, ownerless and temporary.
It was as though a living creature could never have dwelt in these houses.
The sun, like a golden blade, shaved away and removed the edge of the wall's shadow.
The lanes stretched between old whitewashed walls; everything was quiet and mute, as though all the elements had observed the sacred law of the stillness of the burning air—the law of silence.
It seemed that secrets were hidden everywhere, so that my lungs did not dare to breathe.
Suddenly I noticed I had passed outside the gate.
The heat of the sun, with a thousand sucking mouths, drew the sweat out of my body.
The shrubs of the plain had become the color of turmeric under the shining sun.
The sun, like a feverish eye, scattered its burning rays from the bottom of the sky over the silent, lifeless landscape.
But the soil and plants here had a particular smell, so strong that smelling it reminded me of the moments of my childhood.
It not only brought the movements and words of that time before my memory, but for a moment I felt that period within myself, as though it had happened yesterday.
A kind of pleasant dizziness came over me, as though I had been born again in a lost world.
This feeling had an intoxicating property and affected the depths of my being, through my veins and sinews, like sweet old wine.
In the plain I recognized the thorns, stones, tree trunks and little wild-thyme shrubs; I recognized the familiar smell of the greenery; I remembered my faraway days, but all these memories had moved away from me in an enchanted manner, and those memories had an independent life among themselves, while I was no more than a distant and helpless witness, and I felt a deep whirlpool had been dug between them and me.
I felt that today my heart was empty, and the bushes had lost the magical fragrance of that time; the cypress trees were farther apart and the hills had become drier.
The being I had been then no longer existed; if I summoned him and spoke to him, he would not hear or understand what I said.
He had the appearance of someone I once knew, but he was not me and not part of me.
The world seemed to me an empty and sorrowful house, and anxiety swirled in my breast, as though I were now compelled to inspect all the rooms of this house barefoot.
I passed through the rooms within rooms, but when I reached the last room facing that harlot, the doors behind me closed of themselves, and only the trembling shadows of walls whose angles had disappeared stood guard around me like Black female and male servants.
