- Scene 9: The black-clad figure on the doorstep
Who and what is here
For the illustration Two bodies entwined on a narrow bed like mandrake roots, a hand mirror held near her lips.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
Now I could feel the warmth of her body and smell the damp odor rising from her heavy black hair.
I do not know why I raised my trembling hand—for my hand was not under my control—and passed it over her lock of hair? A lock that had always clung to her temples.
Then I thrust my fingers into her hair. Her hair was cold and damp; cold, completely cold.
As though several days had passed since she died. I had not been mistaken; she was dead.
I slipped my hand inside the front of her garment and placed it upon her breast and heart. Not the slightest beat could be felt.
I brought the mirror and held it before her nose, but there was not the slightest sign of life in her.
I wanted to warm her with the heat of my own body, give her my warmth, and take the coldness of death from her, perhaps by this means I could breathe my own spirit into her body.
I took off my clothes, went onto the bed and lay beside her. We were pressed together like the male and female mandrake.
Indeed her body was like the body of a female mandrake separated from its male, and it had that same burning love of the mandrake.
Her mouth had an astringent, bitter taste, the taste of the end of a cucumber. Her entire body had grown cold as hail.
I felt that the blood in my arteries was freezing and this cold was penetrating to the bottom of my heart.
All my efforts were useless. I got down from the bed and put on my clothes.
No, it was no lie; she had come here, into my room, into my bed, and surrendered her body to me. She had given me both her body and her soul!
While she was alive, while her eyes were filled with life, only the memory of her eyes tormented me;
but now, without feeling or movement, cold and with her eyes closed, she had come and surrendered herself to me—with closed eyes!
This was the same person who had poisoned my whole life—or perhaps my life was predisposed to become poisoned, and I could have no life other than a poisoned one.
Now here in my room she gave me her body and her shadow.
Her fragile, temporary soul, which had no connection with the world of earthly beings, slowly came out through her pleated black dress,
out of the body that tormented her, and went into the world of wandering shadows; it was as though it took my shadow with it too.
But her body lay there without feeling or movement. Her soft, numb muscles, her sinews and bones, were waiting to decay,
and a delicious meal had been prepared for the worms and mice beneath the ground.
In this poor room full of misery and destitution, in a room like a grave, amid the darkness of the eternal night that surrounded me and had penetrated the walls,
I had to spend a long, dark, cold, endless night beside a dead person. Beside her dead body.
It seemed to me that for as long as the world has been the world, for as long as I have existed, a corpse, a cold and motionless corpse, has been with me in the dark room.
