The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P164.L01

It was still half dark; I felt a constriction of the heart. It seemed to me that the ceiling weighed down upon my head, the walls had become immensely thick, and my chest was about to burst.

P164.L02

My sight had grown dim. For some time I stared in terror at the beams of the room, counting them and beginning again.

P164.L03

As soon as I squeezed my eyes shut, a sound arose. Naneh-Joon had come to sweep my room and had put my breakfast in the upstairs room.

P164.L04

I went upstairs and sat before the sash window. From there the old junk dealer in front of my room was not visible; only on the left side could I see the butcher;

P164.L05

but his movements, which from my room’s window had seemed frightening, heavy, and deliberate, looked ridiculous and pitiful from up here, as though this man ought not to have been a butcher and was merely acting a part.

P164.L06

They brought the thin black packhorses, with two sheep carcasses hanging on either side, coughing deeply and dryly.

P164.L07

The butcher ran his greasy hand over his moustache, examined the sheep with a buyer’s eye, and with difficulty carried two of them and hung them on the hooks in his shop.

P164.L08

He stroked the thighs of the sheep. No doubt last night, too, when he rubbed his hand over his wife’s body, he thought of sheep and wondered how much money he would earn if he killed his wife!
