Dream city of the stiffened dead

He dreams of a morning-glory-wreathed city whose people stand stiffened with blood at their mouths, and every head he touches falls off. A man like the junk dealer holding a knife loses his head, and so does his brother-in-law when offered cookies.

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P161.L01

When my eyelids came down, a blurred world took shape before me; a world that I had created entirely myself and that corresponded to my thoughts and observations;

P161.L02

In any case it was much more real and natural than my waking world; as though no obstacle or barrier stood before my thought and imagination; time and place lost their effect.

P161.L03

This feeling of extinguished desire, of which sleep was the offspring, was born of my ultimate needs; it embodied before me incredible yet natural forms and events;

P161.L04

and after I awoke, at that very moment I still doubted my own existence and was unaware of my own time and place;

P161.L05

as though I had made all the dreams I saw myself and had known their true interpretation.

P162.L01

It was very late in the night when I fell asleep. Suddenly I saw that I was wandering freely and breathing easily in the streets of an unknown city whose strange houses had geometric shapes—prisms, cones, cubes—with short dark openings, and whose doors and walls were entwined with morning-glory plants.

P162.L02

But the people of this city had died a strange death. All had stiffened where they stood; two drops of blood had run from their mouths onto their clothes.

P162.L03

Whoever I touched, his head came off and fell.

P163.L01

I arrived before a butcher’s shop. I saw a man resembling the old junk dealer in front of our house, with a scarf around his neck and a knife in his hand, staring at me with red eyes as if their eyelids had been cut off.

P163.L02

I tried to take the knife from his hand; his head came off and fell to the ground. In extreme fear I took to flight.

P163.L03

I ran through the streets; everyone I saw had stiffened in his place. I was afraid to look behind me.

P163.L04

When I reached my father-in-law’s house, my brother-in-law—the younger brother of that harlot—was sitting on the platform;

P163.L05

I put my hand in my pocket and took out two cookies; I wanted to give them to him, but as soon as I touched him his head came off and fell to the ground. I cried out and woke.
