- Scene 32: The old junk dealer under the arch
Who and what is here
For the illustration A flushed man addressing his reflection while an old nurse stands silent in the doorway.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
Beside the opium apparatus I dispersed all my dark thoughts amid the delicate heavenly smoke.
At that time my body thought, my body dreamed, slipped, and flew as though released from the weight and thickness of air into an unknown world filled with unknown colors and images.
Opium had breathed a vegetable soul, the slow-moving soul of a plant, into my body. I traveled in the vegetable realm; I had become a plant;
but as I dozed before the brazier and leather mat, with the cloak on my shoulders, I do not know why I remembered the old junk dealer!
He too hunched over his wares and sat in this very posture of mine. The thought filled me with terror.
I stood up, threw off the cloak, and went before the mirror; my cheeks were flushed, the color of meat in front of the butcher’s shop;
my beard was untidy, but I had acquired a spiritual and deadly air; my sick eyes looked tired, injured, and childish.
As though all heavy underground and human things had melted within me! I liked my own face; I took a kind of sensual pleasure in myself.
Before the mirror I said to myself: “Your pain is so deep that it is caught at the bottom of your eyes... and if you weep, either tears will come from behind your eyes or no tears will come at all!”
Then I said again: “You fool! Why do you not get rid of yourself sooner? What are you waiting for? What do you still expect? Is there not a flask of wine in the back closet of your room? Drink a mouthful and be off for good! Fool! You are a fool!”
I was talking to the air! The thoughts that came to me were not connected to one another.
I heard my own voice in my throat, but I did not understand the meaning of the words.
In my head these sounds mingled with other sounds; as when I had a fever, the fingers of my hands seemed larger than usual, my eyelids were heavy, and my lips had thickened.
As soon as I turned, I saw my nurse standing in the doorway. I burst into loud laughter.
My nurse’s face was motionless; her lightless eyes stared at me, but without surprise, anger, or dejection.
Generally a foolish movement produces laughter, but my laughter was deeper than that. This great foolishness was connected to all those other things in the world that people have not discovered and that are difficult to understand.
What is lost in the depths of the darkness of nights was a movement beyond humanity—death.
My nurse picked up the brazier and walked out with measured steps. I wiped the sweat from my forehead; white spots had appeared on the palms of my hands;
I leaned against the wall, pressed my head against the wall pier, and seemed to feel better;
Then I do not know where I had heard this song! I murmured to myself: “Come, let us go and drink wine, drink the wine of the land of Ray; if we do not drink now, when shall we drink?”
