Who and what is here
For the illustration The writing pen case in close-up with the familiar cypress, old man, dancer and stream.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
My life seemed to me as unnatural, unknown, and unbelievable as the picture on the pen case with which I am occupied in writing;
as though a mad, obsessive painter had painted the cover of this pen case.
Often when I look at this picture it seems familiar to me. Perhaps it is because of this picture... perhaps this very picture compels me to write.
A cypress tree is drawn, beneath which a hunchbacked old man, resembling the yogis of India, squats, wrapped in a cloak, with a turban on his head, holding the index finger of his left hand to his mouth in astonishment;
opposite him a girl in a long black dress, with an unnatural bearing—perhaps a Bugam-dasi—dances before him, holding a morning glory in her hand, and a stream separates them.
