In fact her mother was my mother too; for I never saw my mother and father,

P101.L01

I have heard several kinds of stories about my father and mother; I imagine to myself that only one of these stories, which Naneh-Joon told me, must be true.

P101.L07

After a time my father falls in love with a virgin girl, a Bogam-dasi—the dancer of the Lingam temple.

P101.L08

The work of this girl was religious dancing before the great idol Lingam and service in the idol temple—a warm-blooded, olive-colored girl with lemon-shaped breasts, large slanting eyes, slender joined eyebrows, between which she placed a red mark.

P101.L09

Now I can picture to myself the Bogam-dasi—that is, my mother—with an embroidered, colored silk sari, uncovered breast, and a silk headband,

P101.L13

and through proportionate movements and lust-arousing gestures—sacred movements—the Bogam-dasi opened like a flower petal, sent a tremor along her shoulders and arms, bent and then drew herself together again.

P101.L19

My father becomes so enamored of the Bogam-dasi that he adopts the religion of the dancing girl—the religion of Lingam; but after a while, when the girl becomes pregnant, they expel her from temple service.

P102.L02

but apparently his tastes and loves also agreed with my father’s; he falls in love with my mother not with one heart but with a hundred, and finally deceives her,

P102.L04

As soon as the affair is discovered, my mother says she will leave them both unless my father and uncle undergo the cobra ordeal

P102.L07

and whichever one is bitten by the snake will naturally cry out; then the snake-charmer opens the room’s door, saves the other, and the Bogam-dasi belongs to him.

P103.L01

Before they are put into the dungeon, my father asks the Bogam-dasi to dance before him once again, to perform the sacred temple dance,

P103.L08

According to the condition and agreement, the Bogam-dasi becomes my uncle’s.
