The cobra ordeal

When the uncle seduces the dancer by impersonating his twin, she demands the brothers be shut in a dark room with a cobra, the survivor to have her. She dances a last time like a cobra; a mad laugh rises from the room, and one brother emerges with white hair, his identity forever unknown.

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P102.L01

I had only just been born when my uncle returns from his journey to Benares,

P102.L02

but apparently his tastes and loves also agreed with my father’s; he falls in love with my mother not with one heart but with a hundred, and finally deceives her,

P102.L03

because the outward and inward resemblance that he bore to my father makes this easy.

P102.L04

As soon as the affair is discovered, my mother says she will leave them both unless my father and uncle undergo the cobra ordeal

P102.L05

and she will belong to whichever of them remains alive.

P102.L06

The ordeal consisted in putting my father and uncle into a dark room like a dungeon together with a cobra,

P102.L07

and whichever one is bitten by the snake will naturally cry out; then the snake-charmer opens the room’s door, saves the other, and the Bogam-dasi belongs to him.

P103.L01

Before they are put into the dungeon, my father asks the Bogam-dasi to dance before him once again, to perform the sacred temple dance,

P103.L02

she agrees and dances to the snake-charmer’s reed pipe before the torchlight with meaningful, rhythmic, gliding movements, and twists like a cobra.

P103.L03

Then they put my father and uncle into a special room with the cobra.

P103.L04

Instead of a cry of anguish, a moan mixed with revolting laughter rises, a mad cry.

P103.L05

They open the door; my uncle comes out of the room, but his face is old and broken and his hair, from the intensity of fear and terror,

P103.L06

the sound of the sliding and hissing of the angry snake with round, spark-filled eyes and venomous teeth, whose body consisted of a long neck ending in a swelling like a small-headed spoon,

P103.L07

from the intensity of horror, my uncle emerges from the room with white hair.

P103.L08

According to the condition and agreement, the Bogam-dasi becomes my uncle’s.

P103.L09

A terrible thing! It is not known whether the person who survived the ordeal was my father or my uncle.

P103.L10

For as a result of this ordeal he had suffered a mental disturbance, had completely forgotten his former life, and did not recognize the child.

P103.L11

Therefore they assumed he was my uncle.

P104.L01

Is not all this legend connected to my life?

P104.L02

Or has the echo of this disgusting laughter and the terror of this ordeal not left its effect on me, and is it not connected with me?
