The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

At the beginning of the night, when I got up from beside the opium brazier, I looked out through my room’s window; a dry black tree and the boarded-up door of the butcher’s shop could be seen.

Dark shadows had become mingled together. I felt that everything was empty and temporary. The black, tar-covered sky was like an old black veil perforated by countless shining stars.

Just then the call to prayer rose; it was a call at an unusual time; apparently a woman—perhaps that harlot—was in labor, had gone to the birthing bricks. A dog’s whining could be heard through the morning call to prayer.

I thought to myself: “If it is true that every person has a star in the sky, mine must be distant, dark, and meaningless! Perhaps I have never had a star at all!”

At this moment the voices of a band of drunken watchmen rose from the lane as they passed, making obscene jokes with one another. Then they broke into song together and sang:

P156.L02

“Come, let us go and drink wine, drink the wine of the land of Ray; if we do not drink now, when shall we drink?”

P157.L01

I drew back in fear; their song echoed in the air in a peculiar way. Little by little their voices became distant and muffled. No, they had no business with me; they did not know...
