Where the text names them
I wish I had died at that very moment. Perhaps that child she had been pregnant with has died!
Sometimes she brought me gossip; for example, a few days earlier she told me that her daughter—that harlot—was sewing a burial shirt for her own child at an auspicious hour. Then, as though she too knew, she offered me consolation.
Just then the call to prayer rose; it was a call at an unusual time; apparently a woman—perhaps that harlot—was in labor, had gone to the birthing bricks. A dog’s whining could be heard through the morning call to prayer.
I do not want to be indebted to you! But yesterday your wife had seen spotting ... we knew that the child ...
I laughed and said: “The child must look like the old reciter; it must have stirred in response to his face!”
No, it was never possible that the child had stirred in response to my face.
“Shah-joon said: If I had not lost my child, the whole house would have become ours.”
