- Scene 31: The butcher and the black packhorses
Who and what is here
For the illustration Total darkness pierced only by a pale hand resting on a feverish brow.
The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
When I woke, my cheeks had become red like the meat before a butcher’s shop.
My body was hot and I coughed—what deep, frightening coughs!
Coughs that seemed to come from some unknown hollow of my body! Like the coughs of the packhorses that brought sheep carcasses to the butcher early in the morning.
I remember distinctly that it was completely dark; for several minutes I was in a state of stupor, and before sleep took me I was speaking to myself.
At this time I felt, I was certain, that I had become a child and was lying in the cradle.
I felt that somebody was near me. Everyone in the house had been asleep for a long time.
It was near the break of dawn; and sick people know that at this time it is as though life is drawn beyond the frontier of the world.
My heart beat violently, but I had no fear; my eyes were open, but I saw no one, because the darkness was very thick and dense.
A few minutes passed; an unpleasant thought came to me; I said to myself: perhaps it is she.
At this very moment I felt that a cool hand was placed on my burning forehead.
I shuddered; two or three times I asked myself: had this not been the hand of Azrael? And I fell asleep.
When I awoke in the morning, my nurse said: my daughter (she meant my wife, that harlot) had come to my bedside and placed my head upon her knee,
she had been rocking me like children. Apparently a feeling of motherly nursing had awakened in her.
I wish I had died at that very moment. Perhaps that child she had been pregnant with has died!
