The knife returns from the junk dealer's cloth

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

When Naneh-Joon brought me she-ass’s milk, honey, and taftoon bread, she had also put a bone-handled knife beside my breakfast on the tray, and said:

P196.L02

she had seen it among the old junk dealer’s wares and bought it. Then she raised her eyebrow and said, “Maybe it will come in handy!”

P196.L03

I picked up her knife and looked at it; it was my own knife.

P196.L04

Then Naneh-Joon said in a complaining, offended manner: “Yes! My daughter—that is, that harlot—says at dawn that you stole my shirt last night.

P196.L05

I do not want to be indebted to you! But yesterday your wife had seen spotting ... we knew that the child ...

P196.L06

She herself said she had become pregnant in the bathhouse. At night I was going to massage her back and saw patches of bruising on her arm.

P196.L07

She showed me and said, ‘Once, when I went into the cellar at an untimely hour, the supernatural ones pinched me.’”

P196.L08

She said again, “Did you have any idea your wife has been pregnant for a long time?”

P196.L09

I laughed and said: “The child must look like the old reciter; it must have stirred in response to his face!”

P196.L10

Then Naneh-Joon went out through the door, her expression changed. It seemed she had not expected this answer.

P196.L11

I immediately got up and, with a trembling hand, took the bone-handled knife into the back closet of my room, put it into a case, and closed its lid.

P197.L01

No, it was never possible that the child had stirred in response to my face.

P197.L02

It must have stirred in response to the old junk dealer’s face!
