'Undo your neck-scarf': the last embrace

At the watchmen's song he dons cloak and scarf, takes the knife and creeps to her room, where she says, 'Have you come? Undo your neck-scarf!' He undresses and takes her, knife still in hand; she bites his lip in two, and in the struggle the knife enters her and she lies dead.

Who and what is here

For the illustration Darkness, two entwined bodies like mandrake roots, a glint of a bone-handled knife.

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P205.L01

My eyes had not yet closed when a band of drunken watchmen passed behind my room and sang together:

P205.L02

“Come, let us go and drink wine, drink the wine of the land of Ray; if we do not drink now, when shall we drink?”

P205.L03

I said to myself: since in the end I will fall into the hands of the police chief.

P205.L04

Suddenly I felt a superhuman strength within myself; my forehead grew cool,

P205.L05

I got up, threw the yellow cloak I had over my shoulders, wound my scarf two or three times around my head, and hunched over,

P205.L06

went and took out the bone-handled knife I had hidden in the case, and crept on tiptoe toward that harlot’s room.

P205.L07

When I reached the doorway, the room was immersed in thick darkness.

P205.L08

I listened closely; I heard her voice saying:

P205.L09

“Have you come? Undo your neck-scarf!”

P206.L01

Her voice had a pleasant ring; it had become like the voice of her childhood, like a murmur uttered without responsibility in sleep.

P206.L02

I had heard this voice before in a deep sleep.

P206.L03

Was she dreaming?

P206.L04

Her voice had become muffled and thick like the voice of the little girl who played hide-and-seek with me beside the Soren stream.

P206.L05

I paused a little; again I heard her say: “Come in, undo your neck-scarf!”

P207.L01

I slowly entered the room in darkness, took off my cloak and scarf, and undressed,

P207.L02

but I do not know why I got into bed while the bone-handled knife was still in my hand.

P207.L03

The warmth of her bed was as though it breathed fresh life into my body.

P207.L04

Then I embraced her pleasant, moist, warmly heated body, recalling that thin, pale little girl with large, innocent Turkmen eyes, with whom I had played hide-and-seek beside the Soren stream.

P207.L05

No, I attacked her like a ravenous wild animal, and deep in my heart I felt revulsion toward her.

P207.L06

It seemed to me that the feelings of love and hatred were joined together.

P207.L07

Her moonlit, cool body, the body of my wife, a cobra that coiled around its prey, opened and imprisoned me within itself.

P207.L08

The perfume of her breast was intoxicating. The flesh of her arm, which encircled my neck, had a delicate warmth.

P207.L09

At that moment I wished life would cease; for in that minute all the rancor and resentment I had toward her disappeared, and I tried to hold back my tears.

P207.L10

Without my noticing, like the mandrake plant, her legs locked behind mine and her hands clasped behind my neck.

P207.L11

I felt the pleasant warmth of this fresh flesh; every particle of my burning body drank in that warmth.

P207.L12

I felt that she was drawing me into herself like prey. Feelings of fear and pleasure had mingled.

P207.L13

Her mouth tasted of the end of a cucumber and was astringent.

P207.L14

Amid this pleasant pressure I sweated and was beside myself.

P207.L15

For it was my body, all the particles of my being, that ruled over me; they sang aloud of their conquest and victory;

P207.L16

I, condemned and helpless in this boundless world, had bowed my head in submission before the waves of desire and whim.

P207.L17

Her hair, smelling of mogra perfume, clung to my face, and cries of anxiety and joy arose from the depths of our beings.

P207.L18

Suddenly I felt her bite my lip so hard that it split in the middle.

P207.L19

Did she gnaw her own finger in the same way, or had she realized that I was not the old man with the harelip?

P207.L20

I wanted to save myself, but the slightest movement was impossible for me. Whatever I tried was futile.

P207.L21

The flesh of our bodies had been soldered together. I thought she had gone mad.

P207.L22

In the struggle I moved my hand involuntarily and felt that the knife in my hand entered some part of her body.

P207.L23

A warm liquid spilled over my face. She screamed and released me.

P207.L24

I kept the warm liquid that had filled my fist just as it was and threw the knife away.

P207.L25

My hand was free; I touched her body. It had become completely cold. She was dead.
